Just ONE speck of your house dust will contain some or all of these ...... microscopic creatures called house dust mites, fabric fibres, human skin particles, animal dander (skin scales), parts of cockroaches-spiders and other insects, mould/fungal spores, bacteria, food particles cigarette ash, incinerator ash (blown in through windows/open doors), fireplace ash, combustion products, synthetic textile fiber, wool, cotton, paper and silk fibres, dried residue of room sprays and/or fly sprays, fingernail filings, glass particles, glue, graphite, hair - human and animal, insect fragments (flies, mosquitoes and other dead bugs), oil, soot, paint chips, plant parts, pollen, polymer foam particles, salt and sugar crystals, human skin scales, soil, stone particles, tobacco, wood shavings (also pencil shavings) and other debris. Of these, animal dander (skin scales), house dust mites and cockroaches are the most common culprits. A person may be allergic to one or more of any of these substances, and, if exposed to the dust, will have an allergic reaction." Dust mite significance as pests is due to the powerful allergens contained in the mites, their cast skins, fecal material and secretions. Symptoms of a house dust mite allergy include stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, coughing or watery eyes. * Inhalation of dust mite allergens by hypersensitive individuals can result in acute attacks of bronchial Asthma, accompanied by wheezing, shortness of breath, and perhaps even death. Diagnostic tests and clinical studies by allergists have shown house dust mite to be the most common allergy in Asthmatics, and an important "root cause" for the development of Asthma in young children. Recent studies in the united states suggest that at least 45 percent of young people with Asthma are allergic to house dust mites. Unlike "seasonal" allergies caused by moulds and pollen, people who are allergic to dust mites often will have symptoms year round. To the Top

After a blood meal they are dark red, rounded (distended). These pests usually come out at night or in darkened areas. The pest’s small white eggs hatch into almost transparent nymphs that start feeding at the first opportunity and moult five times before becoming adults. Usually, all stages of development are present in an infestation.

A temperature of 70°F is ideal for bed bugs; only adults are present at 50°F or lower. Bed bugs have been known to live as long as 18 months. At least three generations per year are possible. Bed bugs do not generally travel too far from their host. But when hiding places and hosts are few, they may be found almost anywhere-- in the seams of mattresses, pillows, in bed springs, in cracks of floorboards, behind peeled wallpaper, in picture frames, in couches, stuffed chairs, clothing and even the seams of curtains; wherever a dark crack or crevice might be. Excrement spots are often found where they rest. Cast skins will also be found, especially where infestations are heavy. Bed bugs usually feed at night, but very hungry bed bugs are less likely to wait for darkness. Bed bugs inject a fluid into their host (this might be YOU) to help them get their blood meal. This fluid makes some people sensitive to bites, causing irritation, itching and inflammation. Other people can live with bed bugs and not be aware of their presence. There seems to be no consistent way to determine the difference between bed bug bites and flea bites. Pets, birds, rats or mice may help support bed bug populations. To the Top
