This is the beginning of a special story about Sami-Trook who is a very special, educational Toy. He is a young Truckie travelling all over Australia and throughout the World to other Trucking Convoy's, who raise money to help needy children. Sami will grow up with Convoy For Kids. Sami Trook also has Asthma.
Sami was cruising up the Highway, pulling a big, long load of goodies just as his Dad did before him. Sami-Trook had a very long haul ahead. He was listening to some music, singing along, thinking what a great day it was, when - all of a sudden his CB Radio started making noises. He turned the music down to listen to what the other truckies were talking about. They were saying something about a Convoy.
Sami listened very intently. The other truck drivers were asking all the truckies on the highways and byways to join in a very special Convoy For Kids to help children with Asthma. Sami got straight onto his CB and said "Breaker-Breaker, can someone out there tell me more about this Convoy For Kids?". You see, Sami loved kids and he also had Asthma.
One of the Truckies said they would tell Sami all about the Convoy at the next Truck Stop, as Sami had to stop for a rest break and some lunch.
When Sami stopped for lunch, he joined his trucking mates and they told him there was a Convoy For Kids in Melbourne who were raising money for Asthma Kids because Australia has the highest rate of children with Asthma in the World. Sami knew that Truckies and Truckers all over the World, in many different countries, formed Convoy's to raise money for various children's charities, however he had never had a chance to join a Convoy in Australia.
Sami meets Emma-O-Possum
Lots and lots of truckies were going to Melbourne for the Convoy and they wanted Sami to come along too. Sami didn't hesitate to say "Yes, count me in. I would love to join the Convoy. It will be lots of fun and we will be helping the kids at the same time". Sami got all the truck entry details about the Convoy from his mates and went on his way, feeling very happy that he could help do something for the kids.
As Sami headed up the highway, he wasn't humming away to himself any more, he was thinking about getting his Big Rig ready for the Convoy. Over the next few weeks, he told every truckie he met, about the Convoy. They were all as excited as Sami. Another couple of weeks went by and Sami was getting his cleaning and polishing gear ready to wash and polish the truck for the Convoy. He really wanted his truck to be very, very clean and shiny so it would be gleaming on the Convoy day.
Sami was heading back home to Melbourne from a long Interstate trip, and had to stop for a break to have a snooze in his sleeper. He pulled into a truck stop, got out of his semi to stretch his legs and then had a few hours sleep in his sleeper (a 'sleeper' is a bed built behind the front seats of a truck, so truckies can have a sleep when they are tired on their long, long trips interstate).
When he woke up, Sami went into the rest-stop's bathroom to have a shower and grab a snack. Heading back to the semi, he sat down on a log to eat his snack when he heard some rustling in the bushes above his head. Sami looked around but didn't see anything and said to himself "it must have just been the wind", and thought no more about it.
He put his rubbish in the bin, jumped up into his big rig and off down the highway he went, thinking how close the Convoy was. It was only a few days away. All of a sudden, he heard a voice. Sami picked up his CB and said "could you please repeat that, I didn't hear what you said". "Hello" the voice said. "Hi", said Sami. "What's your name?". "Emma" said a tiny voice. "Where are you heading for Emma", said Sami. "I'm on my way to Melbourne" Emma said. "So am I, what are you doing in Melbourne", Sami asked. "I am going down to join the Convoy in a beautiful, big, shiny Semi" said Emma. "That's really great Emma" Sami said. "I am about 100 Kilometres from Melbourne, how far away are you in your rig", "I am about 100 kilometres away too" said Emma. "Wow" said Sami, "you must be very close to me", "yes" said Emma, "I am right behind you".
Sami had a look in his rear vision mirrors and thought 'that's funny, I can't see any beautiful, big, shiny semi's behind me - or any semi's at all for that matter'. Sami was very confused so he got back onto the CB Radio and said "Breaker - Breaker - come in Emma" and Emma said "I am, I am in the sleeper behind you". To Sami's surprise Emma jumped into the front seat and Sami was flabbergasted. It was Emma-O-Possum.
"A stowaway" Sami said. Emma apologised while she put her safety belt on and explained that she crept down from the trees behind Sami when he was having his snack at the Truck Stop and climbed into his truck to have a look inside his nice, big, shiny truck. She was very tired from trying to get to Melbourne in time for the Convoy and curled up for a little snooze in Sami's sleeper.
Sami felt rather silly because he thought he was talking to someone on his CB, when all the time Emma-O-Possum was in the back of his rig. Sami asked Emma why she was in the truck and Emma explained that she heard some truckies talking about the Convoy and she wanted to help the Kids. "I was going to ask you for a ride to Melbourne because I haven't got a nice, big, shiny truck to go to the Convoy For Kids" said Emma. "So I jumped from the tree behind you at the truck stop and snuck into your truck. I was so tired, I must have fallen asleep and next thing I knew we were rattling down the highway. I am sorry I didn't ask you first" said Emma. "That's O.K." said Sami, "I don't mind giving you a ride to Melbourne, it will be company for me on my long trip" Sami said.
Emma and Sami chatted the time away and got on very well. They were almost into Melbourne when Emma started to cough and splutter and was having trouble breathing. "Goodness" said Sami, "what's the problem Emma". "I have got Asthma and I forgot to bring my spacer" said Emma. Sami quickly got his spacer out of the glovebox and gave it to Emma (Sami has Asthma and always carries his medication). He growled at her a bit for not remembering to carry her Asthma medication with her in case she had an Asthma attack. Emma was very lucky that Sami had his medication in the truck, because they were a long way from a hospital. Emma promised to always carry it with her in the future.
Sami and Emma arrived in Melbourne just in time to have a rest and polish up the Truck and get ready for the big Convoy For Kids and the Huge Party Day.
Emma promised never, ever, ever to forget her medication again and thanked Sami very much for saving her life and for the ride to Melbourne. Sami and Emma-O-Possum became really good friends.
